Building Diamond Pt 3

In the last blog I left you looking at one of the finished girders awaiting installation in the storage ring. The next stage required a lot of people working together to make sure it all went together smoothly and hopefully with little problem. We had 72 girders to install then couple them all together and keep them under vacuum. On top of that we also had to build up the booster ring and Linac. Now all of what I said was no doubt going over your head so here is a drawing of what Diamond looks like which I borrowed from the Diamond Website

You can see what I mean by the storage ring, booster and linac. The beamlines on the outside are to be added later. The storage ring is where we star building

In the last blog you saw how the girders were transported to the storage ring and how they were lifted around. Now you get to see how they were installed for the fist time

This was the smaller of the three that are installed in to a segment. it is lowered through a gap in the roof

Then down to the place they are to sit, one complication was the elect rial cable trunking that was fitted pror to the first time we came to try them

the other was that the girder was quite close to the ratchet wall

eventually is was landed in the cradle and the vacuum checked out OK

The second one that went in was larger as it has an outlet on the side. You can see where it is from the large ion pump on the side. The outlet was to join on a front end that too the beams out to the experimental hutch outside the wall

These photos show the process of moving over 14 tons of girder through R79 to the trailer

As you can see there are a couple of obstacles and not a lot of clearance

The trailer is backed into the building

and the girder is lowered in the cradles  where it is lashed don to stop any movement. By the way your eyes are not deceiving you that is a young lady guiding the girder in

Same process as before the girder is lovered through the roof space
onto the awaiting cradles

then ito place where it will sit. I might add they have to be very accurate landing it as it goes onto rollers about 30mm wide which is what yuo see the guys looking at

This belive it of not is the number two girder, it goues in between the last tow that were installed, it is also the heaviest at over 14 ton. This is it being loaded in the trailer

the being brought along through the experimental hall

finally into the storage ring, I might add it is quite someting to look up and see this comming in through the roof

then down to were it is able to be manhandled into place

tis is where they position it to be lowered onto the cradle

watching all the while that nothing is damaged and that the bearing surface lines up with the cam rollers

or it does not swing the wrong way
at last it is down in place
and all three are in place. The plastic you see covering it is to stop dust and tiny bits of concrete falling on the parts as the roof is lowered back in place. The next blog will show who we assembled them all together and the building of the linac & Booster rings.
